How Does Paddling New River Work?

a group of people on a boat in the water

On the day of your paddling adventure, come to our outpost which is directly on the South Fork of the New River, park and check in.  When you are ready, board our transportation to go up river, where you enter New River in your canoe, kayak or stand up paddle board (SUP).  Paddle down the river and exit the water at our outpost, where your car is parked.  We have a 6 acre riverfront facility with picnic tables, picnic shelter, and a full service building with bathrooms and a shower for your convenience.  Volleyball, tetherball, disc golf and corn hole are some of the amenities available to you.  You can enjoy both river and earth activities at our outpost all in one day.

Paddling Ticket Features

Wahoos has two types of paddling tickets:

  • Short Trip (Approximately 45 minutes) and
  • Long Trip (Approximately 3.5 to 5 hours).

With both the short trip and long trip options, you start at our location and we take you upriver to one of two different river put ins: Castle Ford or Pine Run.  When you get back to the outpost, you can tube for free if you would like some more fun!

Shuttle Service

Most guests rent a kayak, canoe or SUP from us but, if you have your own boat or SUP, we are more than happy to provide you with shuttle service only.  Please choose the shuttle option when booking!

Booking in Advance & Express Check:

People ask, “Should we book our kayak trip in advance?”  At the New River Outpost, during our main season, we welcome walk ins!  The main season is from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  Just head on over and we will get you out on the river as quickly as possible so long as you are there before 4p.m.  Outside of those dates, booking in advance is necessary, although we can often accommodate a same day trip!

The main benefit of booking in advance is that you get all the business of booking (payment and waivers) out of the way in advance so you will not need to do that when you arrive.  Standing in the hot sun signing waivers is no fun, so we do encourage you to book in advance.

If everyone in your group has filled out waivers in advance, you get Express Check In!  SKIP THE LINES! Look in the booking party’s email for an email with the subject line “Action Required for Your Booking.”

Trip Times:

  • Long Trip Times: 10:00a.m. & noon
  • Short Trip Times: The short trip goes out every hour on the hour and the first trip is at 10:00 a.m. & the last trip is at 4 p.m.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your booking time.

Age Limits:

Paddling is suitable for those ages 3 and up.  We do suggest that for those with young children, guests choose the short trip as 3 1/2 hours is quite a long time to sit still for the little ones!

Water Levels:

Water levels vary depending on rainfall.  However, the water is normally between mid calf and chest deep on an adult.  There are some deeper areas.

Dogs:

We welcome you to bring your puppy.  There are often other dogs at the property so make sure your dog plays nice with others please!

Weather:

We go rain or shine!  If there is lightning, we normally would delay your trip to allow those conditions to pass.  If we cancel your trip, you would be entitled to a refund.

Blue Tooth Speaker Rental:

a Bluetooth Speaker with green grass

We now have bluetooth speakers for rent so that you can ROCK THE RIVER…Rent a speaker and get a waterproof phone case that floats for only $12 (a $20 value)!  Make sure to bring your downloaded playlist (no cell signal on the river!)

New River Store:

We have items for sale at the outpost such as ice, water proof phone cases, sunscreen, sunglass straps, soda, snacks, etc.
